Transponder and chip key services in Knoxville

Most cars built after the mid-1990s won't start without a properly programmed chip in the key. Knox Car Keys cuts and programs transponder keys on-site using professional diagnostic equipment - no dealer, no tow.

That blank key from the hardware store won't start your car

It's one of the most common frustrations we hear. Someone loses a key, goes to the hardware store, gets a copy made, and it doesn't work. The key turns in the ignition, but the engine won't start.

That's because most modern vehicles use a transponder system. There's a small chip embedded in the head of the key that sends a signal to the car's immobilizer. If the immobilizer doesn't recognize the signal, it blocks the engine from starting. It's a security feature designed to prevent theft - but it also means a simple key copy isn't enough.

The dealer can handle it, but you already know what that looks like: schedule an appointment, tow the car in, pay the premium. Meanwhile you're without a vehicle.

The other route people try is buying a key and chip online. Sometimes those work. A lot of times they don't - the chip isn't compatible, the quality is poor, or the programming fails. And now you've spent money on a key that's useless.

Transponder key cutting

We cut the physical key blade to match your vehicle's lock and ignition specifications.

Chip programming

We program the embedded transponder chip to communicate with your car's immobilizer. Without this step, the key won't start the engine.

Immobilizer sync

The programmed chip must be recognized by your vehicle's onboard security system. We handle the sync so the car accepts the new key as authorized.

Testing

We test the key in the ignition, verify key is programmed, and confirm the doors lock and unlock properly before we leave.

Most major makes and models

We service transponder key systems across Ford, Chevy, Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler, and many more.

Key origination

Lost all your keys? We can generate a new transponder key from scratch - no original required.

What is a transponder key?

A transponder key has a small electronic chip embedded in the plastic head of the key. When you insert the key and turn the ignition, the chip sends a coded signal to your vehicle's immobilizer. If the signal matches, the car starts. If it doesn't, the engine stays locked.

How do I know if my car uses a transponder key?

If your car was built after the mid-1990s, it almost certainly uses some form of transponder or chip key system. The easiest way to tell is to look at the key head - if it's thicker plastic rather than a thin metal blade all the way through, there's likely a chip inside.

Can you program a key I bought online?

Sometimes, but not always. Many aftermarket keys use lower-quality chips that don't hold programming or aren't compatible with certain vehicles. Call us before you buy anything - we can let you know what will work or supply the right key ourselves.

Why didn't the key I got at the hardware store work?

Because it wasn't programmed. Hardware stores can cut the physical blade, but they don't always have the equipment to program the transponder chip. Without programming, the immobilizer blocks the engine from starting.

Can you add a second transponder key to my car?

Yes. If you already have a working key and want a spare, we can cut and program an additional key to work with your vehicle's system.

How long does it take?

Most transponder key jobs - cutting and programming included - are completed in under an hour on-site.
