Understanding modern car keys

Car keys have changed dramatically over the last 30 years. Most people don't know what type of key their vehicle uses - and that's fine. This guide breaks down the three most common types so you know what you're dealing with.

What does your key look like?

Transponder key

Looks like a traditional car key but with a thicker plastic head. Has a metal blade that goes into the ignition. No buttons on some models - others combine the transponder with a remote head.

Fobik key

Looks like a small remote with a square plug on one end instead of a key blade. Plugs into a slot on the dashboard. May have a small emergency key hidden inside.

Push-to-start / smart key

Fob-shaped with no visible key blade. Your car has a push button instead of a traditional ignition. May have a hidden emergency blade for manual door entry.
